Signs and symptoms of blowfly strike Early detection is critical to minimising the damage caused by blowfly strike. Common signs include: • Restlessness or agitation • Frequent biting or scratching at the affected area • Foul-smelling, wet, or discoloured wool • Visible maggots on the skin or in the fleece • Open wounds or tissue damage • Lethargy, loss of appetite, or signs of systemic illness in severe cases Prevention strategies Preventing blowfly strike is far more effective and humane than treating it after it occurs. Key prevention strategies include: 1. Crutching: With crutching, any long wool on the area around the tail and down the inside of the legs is neatly removed with sheep shears. Crutching reduces the risk of faecal contamination and keeps the area clean and dry. 2. Chemical preventatives: Insecticidal treatments, such as pour-on, sprays, or dips, can repel blowflies and kill larvae. 3. Good hygiene and management: Regularly inspect sheep for signs of soiling, wounds, or infections. Maintain clean pastures and avoid overcrowding. 4. Fly traps and environmental control: Using fly traps or insecticides in the environment can help reduce the blowfly population. Treatment of blowfly strike If blowfly strike is detected, immediate action is required to prevent further damage and suffering. Treatment steps include: 1. Isolate the affected sheep: Separate the infected animal to prevent the spread of maggots to other sheep. 2. Remove wool and maggots: Carefully clip the wool around the affected area to expose the maggots. Remove as many maggots as possible; by hand or with a gentle stream of water. 3. Apply insecticidal treatment: Use an appropriate insecticide like Supona® Aerosol that will kill any remaining maggots and prevent reinfestation. 4. Treat wounds and infections: Clean the affected area with an antiseptic solution and apply wound dressings or antibiotics if necessary. A product like Terramycin® Wound Spray will work to treat wounds. 5. Provide supportive care: Ensure the sheep has access to clean water, food, and a stress-free environment to aid in recovery.
